In 2006, Jackquelyn “Jaky” Calago received news that would change the course of her life—she had been awarded a full scholarship from Security Bank Foundation, Inc.
At the time, staying in school was already a struggle. Jaky had entered Centro Escolar University–Manila in 2004, determined to finish college despite her family’s financial difficulties. Her father, who worked as an Overseas Filipino Worker in Saudi Arabia, suddenly ended his contract and returned home without a backup plan, leaving her mother to carry the burden of supporting the family. At one point, her mother even suggested that she might have to stop studying because they could no longer afford the expenses.
Refusing to give up on her dream, Jaky worked part-time at the Dean’s Office while studying. Her daily allowance covered her transportation from Marikina to Manila and her meals for the entire day. She made sure to eat before leaving home and often relied on a simple lunch of siomai to get through the day. Sometimes, she even skipped meals just to contribute to school projects. She also had only one set of white school uniform, which her mother washed every night so she could wear it again the next day.
Then came the opportunity that changed everything. After being noticed for her dedication while doing after-school duties, Jaky was encouraged to apply for the Security Bank Foundation scholarship. When she finally received it, the first thing she bought was a second set of uniform—a simple purchase that meant dignity, relief, and hope for their family. Her mother was moved to tears. “The scholarship did not just secure my education—it lifted a heavy burden off my family,” Jaky recalls.
With her tuition covered, Jaky focused on her studies and campus leadership. She served as Vice President of Accountancy, Management and Technology (AMT) organization and earned multiple scholastic awards, eventually graduating Cum Laude in 2008 with a degree in Business Administration major in Management.
Twenty (20) years after becoming a Security Bank Foundation scholar, Jaky now serves as a Senior Paralegal at SN Aboitiz Power Group, bringing with her years of experience in legal support, compliance, and corporate governance.
Despite her professional success, Jaky has never forgotten the kindness that helped change her life. Inspired by the generosity she once received, she now makes it her personal mission to give back, supporting orphanages and animal shelters. “I do my best to help others, just as I was helped when I needed it most,” she says.
Now a proud alumna of the Security Bank Foundation scholarship program, Jaky continues to carry deep gratitude for the opportunity that helped shape her future. What once seemed like a distant dream for a student with one uniform and a ₱150 daily allowance became a reality through perseverance, faith, and the generosity of those who believed in her potential.
