Traveler’s Checklist: What To Do Before and After Traveling Abroad

Imagine after years of saving up for your dream vacation, you take the step to book that dream trip you’ve always wanted to. Tickets, bookings, itinerary? Ready! Now, imagine lining up at the airport, and suddenly being stopped or delayed because you did not prepare the right documents to pass through immigration. Suddenly, your “dream vacation” gets a dose of reality and stress.

Traveling abroad is exciting, but if you’re a Filipino leaving the country, there are a few extra steps you need to prepare for compared to travelers from many other countries. Philippine immigration procedures require specific documents and preparation to ensure a smooth departure and return.

This guide covers everything Filipino travelers should do before leaving the Philippines and after coming back, including immigration requirements, travel documents, and practical tips to avoid delays at the airport.

What you need to prepare before traveling abroad

1. Make Sure Your Passport Is Valid

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel date. Many countries will deny entry if your passport is close to expiration.

Philippine passports are issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs (Philippines), so if your passport is expiring soon, renew it well before your trip.

2. Prepare the Documents Philippine Immigration May Ask For

When departing from the Philippines, you will go through immigration screening by the Bureau of Immigration (Philippines).

Immigration officers may ask several questions and request documents to confirm that you are traveling legitimately.

Required Documents

Always bring:

  • Valid passport
  • Boarding pass (make a photocopy just in case)
  • Visa (if required by your destination)

Additional Documents Often Requested

To avoid delays or being “offloaded,” make sure to prepare the following:

  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Hotel booking or accommodation confirmation
  • Travel itinerary
  • Proof of funds (cash, credit card, or bank statement)
  • Company ID or certificate of employment
  • Approved leave from your employer

If you are self-employed or a freelancer, bring:

  • Business registration documents
  • Proof of income or bank statements

These documents help demonstrate that you have clear travel plans and will return to the Philippines.

3. Complete Your eTravel Registration

Before your flight, all passengers must complete the digital travel declaration through the Philippine eTravel System.

The form generates a QR code that airport authorities scan during departure and arrival.

Important reminders:

  • Register within 72 hours before your flight
  • Save or screenshot your QR code
  • Prepare to show it at the airport

4. Notify Your Bank Before Traveling

If you plan to use your credit or debit card abroad, inform your bank before leaving the country.

Many banks—such as Security Bank and other Philippine banks—monitor unusual transactions. Without a travel notice, your card may be temporarily blocked while overseas.

Bringing a mix of payment methods is recommended:

  • Local currency cash
  • Debit card
  • Credit card

This ensures you always have access to funds during your trip.

Security Bank credit card holders can conveniently report travel plans abroad through the Security Bank app or Security Bank Online (SB Online) website, eliminating the need to call. Use the “Manage Trip Abroad” feature under account services to prevent card blocking.

How to Report Travel via App/Web:

Via App: Log in, select your credit card, go to the “Manage” tab, and select “Manage Trip Abroad” to enter your details.

Via Website: Log in to SB Online, go to “Account Requests,” and select “Report Trip Abroad”

5. Consider Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is highly recommended for international trips and is often required for visas, particularly when visiting the Schengen area in Europe.

Travel insurance typically covers:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Trip cancellations or delays
  • Lost luggage
  • Emergency evacuation

A good travel insurance plan can save you from high unexpected costs abroad, so it’s a good idea to either purchase one ahead of time or bring a credit card that comes with free travel insurance.

6. Check Entry Requirements of Your Destination

Each country has its own entry requirements for Filipino travelers. Before flying, verify whether your destination requires:

  • A travel visa
  • Vaccination certificates
  • Arrival forms
  • Proof of accommodation

You can check travel advisories through the Department of Foreign Affairs or the official website of your destination’s embassy.

7. Keep Copies of Your Travel Documents

Always bring both physical and digital copies of important documents, such as:

  • Passport
  • Visa
  • Travel insurance
  • Hotel reservations
  • Flight tickets

Save digital copies in your email or cloud storage in case your documents are lost.

What Happens at the Airport When Leaving the Philippines

On the day of your departure, you will go through several steps at the airport:

  1. Airline check-in
  2. Immigration interview
  3. Security screening
  4. Boarding gate

During immigration screening, officers from the Bureau of Immigration may ask simple questions like:

  • What is the purpose of your trip?
  • How long will you stay abroad?
  • Where will you be staying?
  • Who are you traveling with?

Answer clearly and provide documents if requested. Remember to stay calm.

What Should Do You When Returning to the Philippines

After your trip abroad, there are also a few steps you must complete when arriving back in the country.

1. Register Your Arrival via eTravel

Before landing in the Philippines, returning travelers must again complete the entry form through the Philippine eTravel System.

You will receive another QR code that airport officials will scan upon arrival.

2. Go Through Immigration

Returning Filipino citizens pass through passport control handled by the Bureau of Immigration (Philippines).

This process is typically quick for Philippine passport holders.

3. Pass Through Customs Inspection

After collecting your baggage, you will pass through customs under the Bureau of Customs (Philippines).

You must declare if you are bringing:

  • Items worth more than ₱50,000

  • Cash exceeding USD 10,000

  • Restricted or regulated goods

Declaring items properly helps avoid penalties or confiscation.

4. Claim Any Tax Refunds Before Leaving Your Destination

Many countries offer VAT refunds for tourists, but these must usually be claimed before departing the country where you made your purchases.

Once you return to the Philippines, you will no longer be able to process these refunds.

Final Tips for Filipino Travelers

To ensure a smooth international trip, remember these key tips:

  • Prepare immigration documents ahead of time
  • Register for eTravel before departure and arrival
  • Bring proof of employment or ties to the Philippines
  • Notify your bank before using your card overseas
  • Keep digital copies of your travel documents

With proper preparation, you can enjoy a smooth airport experience and a stress-free international trip.

If you’re planning your first international trip, understanding Philippine immigration requirements and travel procedures can make all the difference between a stressful airport experience and a smooth start to your adventure abroad.
