But it is also a fact that these days, online hate and cyber bullying have become very real and rampant,” quipped Ma. Patricia Tan, Security Bank First Vice President.

Defined by anti-cyber bullying advocate Sonnie Santos as ‘using technology as a medium to sow fear and strip the victim of self-worth and dignity’, cyber bullying has become prevalent in the country because of our democratic culture – a strong sense of entitlement that Filipinos can do or say whatever they want without the accountability.

Cyber bullying has become a most pressing issue in the country. According to Google Trends, the Philippines ranks fourth highest in Google searches worldwide for ‘cyber bullying’.

In response to this, Security Bank recently launched an online advocacy video against cyber bullying and online hate.

“Everything online spreads fast and we’re hoping that we make sure messages of the positive kind are what we share instead,” said Alexa Luccina Virata, Security Bank Senior Assistant Manager.

“We deserve an online experience where we can discuss ideas and engage others with respect and without fear,” Patricia Tan added.
