The Best Cars for Modern-Day Moms
Nowadays, finding a mom who doesn’t grind a week’s worth of errands into one day is next to impossible. From doing the morning school run, to hitting the gym, to dropping off the laundry before going to the grocery, moms are all over the place—literally.
Some moms even drive more on a daily basis than most men do. That’s why when it comes to their choice of cars, meeting their unique set of criteria is top priority. Here are the bare essentials for the ideal supermom vehicle:
- increased seating capacity
- flexible and spacious cargo area
- easy to drive around town
- great fuel economy
On top of that, social media has introduced a new criteria into the mix–fashion. Supermoms are becoming more style-conscious now more than ever! That means car manufacturers have to—as they say—step it up a notch in terms of design. Let’s face it, modern-day moms just won’t be caught dead driving anything remotely similar to an early Chrysler Town & Country these days.
If you’re looking to buy a new car that’ll help you with your daily grind, these 3 options fit the bill quite well (while still allowing you to channel your inner Victoria Beckham):
Ford Ecosport 1.5L Titanium Powershift
SRP: P988,000
Based off of the smaller Fiesta model (yes, the hot hatch that’s been selling like hotcakes the past few years), the Ecosport is similar to drive, if not even better. The higher ground clearance provides better road visibility, which in effect, inspires more confidence when weaving through Manila traffic as you sit a bit higher than most sedans—hello, defensive driving!
Every mom has been there before: you drop your kids off to school on a stormy morning only to find out by midday that school has been cancelled due to bad weather. Worse, the roads are flooded and your kids are stuck in school. It’s a nightmare.
Thankfully, when the storm does hit, the Ecosport’s 550mm wading depth should get you in and out of flooded streets without breaking a sweat. And although driving in bad weather isn’t encouraged—let alone driving in the flood—it’s good to know the Ecosport can take on some water when a rescue mission is in order.
Inside, Ford has managed to incorporate around 20 storage compartments throughout the whole cabin, capable of holding anything from water bottles to books and iPads. It also has a central compartment that can cool six cans of drinks at the same time. The 60/40 split rear seats drop and tumble with a pull of a lever for increased cargo capacity.
Additional features include Hill Start Assist, Ford’s proprietary SYNC infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity with voice control, and a 12v power outlet in the rear to quell tantrums when the iPad runs out of juice.
Being larger than most sedans without being too unwieldy on the road, the Ford Ecosport brings the best parts of an SUV and sedan together to give you the best of both worlds.
Hyundai Sante Fe 2.2L GLS 4×2 AT
SRP: P1,698,000
For a mom with more than two preschoolers, seating capacity is key. This is where the Hyundai Sante Fe comes in. The 7-seater SUV has enough room in the back for four children without having to leave yaya behind.
Granted your college teenagers might feel a bit cramped in the third row due to a sloped hatch (designed to provide better aerodynamics and a smoother ride), it should be more than comfortable for bunso. Air-conditioning vents are present on all three rows for increased comfort especially on hot summer days—and in the Philippines, that’s most days in a week.
Folding both second and third rows down is where the Santa Fe’s cargo space really shines. A whopping 1,615 liters of cargo space is made available to pack in a surfboard, a bike, or both. It’s perfect for the long weekend out of town.
Up front, the Santa Fe’s cockpit lives up to its stylish exterior design. The dash panel has a solid fit and finish, while stitched leather padding and metal finishes on the doors add to the premium feel.
In terms of performance, we’ll spare you the boredom of going through the numbers and just say that the 2.2 liter diesel engine happily delivers power throughout the rev range via 6-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel economy is impressive at 14-18km/L on the highway and 8-12km/L in stop-and-go traffic. Similar vehicles in its class average 5-7km/L at best. Translation: money saved on gas means more money for… shopping!
With Anti-lock Brakes, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, and a dedicated Economy mode, the Santa Fe impressively delivers the SUV package—you’ll really feel you get more than what you paid for.

Honda Odyssey 2.4L EX-V Navi
SRP: P2,368,000
The past few decades have not been good to the minivan category. The best people-mover money can buy has also managed to earn itself a bad rap for being the epitome of a boring automobile. They’re large, often too slow for their own good, and are extremely unappealing to anyone but our grandparents—thank you, sliding doors.
Honda aims to shatter all preconceived notions with its newest iteration of the Odyssey—sleek, sharp, and downright handsome.
We not going to lie. Being a van, the Odyssey is quite a handful to drive around. It’s big and long, but Honda has made a remarkable effort to make driving it as easy as possible. Apart from the GPS navigation present at the center of the touchscreen dash, a unique setup of multiple camera systems provide a bird-eye’s view of the car and its surroundings—perfect for squeezing through traffic or attempting to parallel park this bad boy.
Speaking of parking, the Odyssey is also equipped with one of the best self-parking systems in the market. Honestly, it’s one of the few systems that don’t feel like a gimmick and is incredibly accurate. It’s capable of backing the nearly 16-foot vehicle into a spot behind it, parallel or otherwise—that’s enough to make your husband feel slightly insecure about his parking skills.
Luxury and space go hand-in-hand and the Odyssey delivers it in spades. Touch controls and wood panels line the dash, and a dark charcoal tone takes up the lounge-like leather seats and plush carpeting throughout the cabin.
There’s a sizable chasm in between the two seats up front—perfect for your handbag or gym duffel. At the back, seats can move back and forth and side-to-side (yes, left and right) for maximum flexibility. Even with the third row fully assembled, the Odyssey still has space for two full-sized suitcases behind it.
Seating is generous as the third row can sit three people quite comfortably; it also collapses in mere seconds to adapt to the space that you need. Second row seats are comprised of two captain’s seats with ottomans for when your kids fancy a nap. They feel sublime and fit for business-class so we can’t blame you wanting to take a nap yourself.
When it comes to entertainment, a TV screen flips down from the ceiling complete with HDMI ports and USB connectivity for your smartphone or laptop.
All in all, Honda delivers an amazing package with the Odyssey by combining luxury and practicality, while guaranteeing a delightful experience for both driver and passenger.
If prices are a bit steep for you, don’t worry. There’s always a best car for every budget. Read more.
